Congress is in the process of determining how much taxpayer money each federal department will receive in 2020. In recent years Congress has pumped more money to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), largely to fuel the government’s detention and deportation of refugees and immigrants. Instead of spending billions of dollars to prop up the deportation machine, Congress should invest in programs that serve our communities through education, workforce development, nutrition and housing assistance, and more.
