Fund the Special Diabetes Program for Indians

The highly successful Special Diabetes Program for Indians (SDPI) is about to expire. Without congressional action, more than 300 programs funded by SDPI face dramatic cuts or elimination.

I am writing you to urge congressional leadership to fully fund and reauthorize the Special Diabetes Program for Indians immediately.

Native Americans have the highest prevalence of diabetes of any U.S. racial and ethnic group. Since the start of the program in 1997, SDPI has helped lower the prevalence of diabetes among Native Americans and significantly improved the outlook of Native Americans diabetes trends. American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/ANs) nationwide have experienced a reduction in A1C levels, reduced cholesterol levels, and weight loss. Between 1996 and 2013, AI/ANs have experienced a 54% decline in incidence rates of End Stage Renal Disease from diabetes – the steepest decline of any ethnic group.

SDPI has proven to be a strong return on investment by providing cost savings in Medicare and improvements in community outcomes. SDPI has a strong history of bipartisan support.

The significant changes in health outcomes and overall cost savings has proved that SDPI is both a successful and crucial program for Indian Country. Not only is it a program helping Native American communities to foster healthier communities, the prevention program is an effective model of Diabetes response. We must continue to fund this program. Please urge leadership to fully fund and reauthorize this program immediately.
