In June 2022, President Biden announced a new U.S. policy on anti-personnel landmines (APL), which established a near global ban on APL use by the U.S. military and set the goal of “ultimately acceding to [the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty].” However, as long as this policy doesn’t have the force of law, any future administration can reverse it. FCNL strongly urges the White House and Pentagon to quickly destroy landmine stockpiles and work with Congress to swiftly join the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty.
