I’m stopping by today because I’m concerned about the crisis at our southern border and President Trump’s proposals that would make the problem worse. The humanitarian crisis must be addressed with real solutions, not the failed policies of detention, deportation, and border militarization.
For too long, Congress has increased funding to detain more people and further militarize border communities. Congress has the power to reverse this trend and exert its oversight authority over the executive branch. Here is what I want your office to do:
- Reject increased spending on detention, deportation, and border militarization.
- Expand oversight of existing enforcement policies and end the ability for ICE to overspend.
- Invest in non-restrictive, community-based alternatives to detention, rather than locking up more children and others.
