Article I of the U.S. Constitution makes explicitly clear that Congress controls the power of the purse. But that has not stopped President Donald Trump from arbitrarily trying to override Congress on both past and future appropriations.

Proverbs 31:9 calls us to care for those in need: “Speak out; judge righteously; defend the rights of the poor and needy.” True leadership demands concern for the wellbeing of everyday people — and for that reason it is essential that Congress retain its authority and reopen the government in a way that puts the people first.
